I ordered this to replace another water leveler that ended up being poorly designed and unreliable. Unlike other designs, the float doesn't move up or down, it just pivots. You really have to fill the base with either water or sand (water seems much easier and a bit heavier) to keep the unit stable, but once it's in place and adjusted I can't see why you would need to mess with it.We'll see how this one works out, but I'm much more optimistic about this unit than the previous one I had. I needed something to maintain the water level in our pool over the summer while we're up north. I can turn the main water supply to our house on and off remotely (and I can see the pool via a camera) so I'm not completely trusting this by leaving it on and unattended for four months. If I notice the water level getting low, I'll turn the main water valve on and then check the pool level in a few hours and turn the water back off again. Strictly speaking I don't need one of these devices, but if I forget to check the pool level and leave the water on, at least I won't be overflowing the pool and wasting a lot of water.

Before I start in on what I don't like and why I won't be using this product for my pool, I'll cover what I do like. This was easy to assemble (despite the many steps and poor instructions - if you're handy or enjoy building toys it's still a cinch). It appears to be very sturdy, and the float is easy to adjust. It appeared to work well during my limited testing.Now for why it's not finding a home in my pool. There was an oily sheen on the surface of the water when it started running, and this did not dissipate with a rinse. Fine, I thought, I'll take it apart and tackle it with some dish soap. But it wasn't in the water for two minutes before the local mourning dove population took note. Sure enough, within another minute they'd perched on top of the float switch housing and were attempting to drink from the pool. I don't mind birds hanging around, and I provide water for them elsewhere in the yard, but they really go for that (apparently) tasty pool water... and I've rescued enough (alive!) doves floating like ducks on the pool when I get up in the morning to know that this will only lead to more trouble (and possibly birds I'm not quick enough to rescue =( ).Apart from the danger to wildlife and strange greasy emissions... it's frankly pretty hideous. It's really, really ugly. Even in the most unobtrusive spot I could find, the black and steel in my otherwise pretty tan and aqua pool area is just. Ugh. This would be a much nicer addition with some decorative (and anti-perch) housing around the float switch. Maybe some false flagstone, or something. But I'll save the money on a workaround and just buy one that doesn't have a birdie baja step.

This filler is impressive. I may not have the smooth lines and body of the common ones, but all that body on those is just breakable plastic. This one is mostly stainless steel (including the hose) with minimal plastic only on the float and the part that holds the weight to keep it in place. It was easy to set up, and works great. With the construction, I expect this one to last a long time.

I've tried several of these before, and this is the sturdiest and most robust.It sits securely in place, measures the pool level accurately, and is easy to remove when needed.There is some assembly required, but not much. It's pretty straightforward and only takes a few minutes. The instruction booklet is clear and has lots of illustrations. One of the steps requires needle nose pliers, which they were kind enough to include.It's easy to adjust the water level, and this should work with just about any inground pool.There is really no place for it to leak except where the garden hoses attaches. But it comes with gaskets which should prevent leaks. If you still notice leaks or are concerned you can always add some teflon tape.
