I'm a big fan of the magblock style of chamber flag and was really excited to try what out for the 10/22. My survival rifle for work is a 10/22 Takedown in a Magpul backpacker stock. I really like having the block in place when the rifle is stowed. The action is still open (and the block will hold the bolt to the rear if the release is disengaged) of course, but I like having the mag well covered. And it's easy enough to work around when assembling the rifle. But there is still room for improvement. The block itself is pretty simplistic with no markings. If you're not already very familiar with 10/22 magazines it's not intuitive which is the front or back. It lacks the tactile indicators of real magazines and the visual differences aren't abundantly obvious even if you are familiar. If you do have it lined up correctly though it does insert smoothly and easily as long as the bolt is correctly locked to the rear. The top of the block can be seen through the open chamber and if the bolt is dropped it will hold it back. During testing the block came out smoothly when the mag release was hit but there was a few times where it did get hung up inside the magazine well. Because the sides are straight walls, the block lacks the texturing and finger grooves of genuine Ruger BX10 rotary 10/22 magazines which makes it a little more difficult to hold onto it when you're fishing it out of the magazine well if it gets jammed up. This is an addition to the different visual and tactile feel that I already mentioned. There is a case to be made that it's good that it has a different look and feel to an actual magazine to alleviate any ambiguity about whether or not you're loading a loaded magazine or a block. But I still think that some of the tactile features to better identify which side is front and help pull the magazine if it gets stuck would be beneficial. I also wouldn't mind having the CLEAR being largely engraved on the top block. You should also note that the block that holds the bolt back does limit capacity with 10/22 mag carriers. It won't fit in the magazine storage in my stock for example. It's not a big issue and not surprising but still something to be aware of.Despite its simple construction and room for improvement. I'm happy with this mag block and will be using it throughout my work season. I would be also be interested in versions that resemble the BX15 and BX25 Ruger magazines. Which would make them a very good training aid for working with new shooters.
