Product Description

Granite Gear, born in the Boundary Waters and tougher than granite

Granite Gear was born among the placid network of wild waterways etched through the boreal forest that make up the Boundary Waters between Minnesota and Ontario. During a paddling trip through Quetico Provincial Park in 1986 Jeff Knight and Dan Cruikshank realized there was a need for better outdoor gear, planting the kernel that became Granite Gear.

From those humble beginnings—two buddies on a camping trip—Granite Gear has grown into an internationally respected brand that matches purpose with weight, comfort and durability. Their award-winning backpacks and accessories have gained a cultish following and have proven their mettle in the earth’s harshest environments, from Mount Everest to the North and South Poles, and to thousands of miles of everyday wear and tear. Jeff and Dan set out to make the best gear imaginable and they and Granite Gear’s team of product designers and engineers have accomplished it—with an ever expanding line of products ranging from stuff sacks, to ultralight packs, to ultra-durable packs that meet the demands of soldiers. Granite Gear’s gear is truly tougher than granite.

Air Compressor

The Air Compressor is Granite Gear's answer for the ultralight packer who wants to save weight by compressing gear and carrying a smaller pack. If you’re familiar with our Rock Solid compression stuffsacks, you know we’ve been making the best packing systems since our beginning in 1986. If you think about it, these stuffsacks need to handle a lot of stress, and it’s no easy feat to shave ounces, but that’s exactly what we’ve done. 210 denier lid and arches are beefy where it’s needed.

Do you believe in magic? Do you believe in the supernatural? Do you believe that the laws of physics can be bent by the hands of a mortal? If so, or if you just want to pack more crap into your bag, this compression sack is for you. I frequently refer to this sack as my portable black hole. It accomplishes nothing short of physics-defying magic: I stuff it tightly to the brim with clothing, put into place the tethered end over the opening of the sack, and then draw the straps tighter. This compresses the clothing in the sack much like a trash compactor. I then use my knee and apply my full weight onto the sack as I continue drawing the straps tighter, resulting in a dense, surprisingly hard hockey puck that used to be three times larger. I generally travel without checking any luggage (carry-on backpack only), even if I am away for 4-6 weeks. This compression sack is my secret. This is my magical black hole that lets me travel long and far without cumbersome luggage and gives me extra room for souvenir goodies. In short, I can’t recommend this enough. Excellent quality, and it delivers on its promise to compress your clothing to unimaginable levels, freeing up room for other stuff or to simply keep things small and tidy during travel.P.S. definitely not recommended for packing fresh produce or glassware.

Seems to work great, the compression strings seem a little sketchy though. I guess they save weight over straps. We'll see how well they hold up.

Hard to use, flimsy straps.

I bought the 23 L to compress clothes as I am a dedicated single pack carry on traveler. This works perfect and is just the right dimensions to fit my Osprey Porter 30. Most compression sacks are round but the rectangle shape packs nicer and fits the pack more efficiently. It is plenty sturdy and has reinforcement where it should. A great addition to my travel gear. Totally pleased.
