About this item

  • Medium Grit: This hone has a Medium grit of 280, allowing you to restore a dull edge without too much work and refine it to be extremely sharp. It won't leave a polished bevel, but that's not something garden tools usually require.
  • Portable Size: It can be hard to take many tool & knife sharpeners, like a Lansky sharpening system, on the go. With this portable axe sharpening stone, you can carry it anywhere. It's great to keep in your camping supplies, shed, or pocket knife sharpening kit.
  • Versatile Use: This honing stone will sharpen the edge of any bladed tool that should be cutting but isn't, be it an axe, machete, lawnmower blade, or knife. No matter what tool it is that's gotten dull, something as simple as a garden tool sharpener can be the solution to your problem.
  • Simple & Easy to Use: When it comes to knife sharpeners, it's easy to get too caught up in complex tools or lost in whetstone selection but anyone can use this simple knife sharpening stone. You don't always need a professional knife sharpener to put a working edge on your cutlery and outdoor tools.
  • Blade Protection: For best results, use Lansky's Nathan's Natural Honing Oil (not included). Honing oil is not required, but it can help to protect the stone and preserve your blade.

How to use the Lansky Lawn and Garden Sharpener

  1. Secure the Sharpener: Begin by carefully holding the sharpener with one hand. Remember, this sharpener doesn't have a handle, so be extra cautious to avoid injuries.
  2. Stabilize Your Tool: Hold the tool you want to sharpen firmly with the other hand. If you’re sharpening a machete, it's best to clamp it to a workbench or rest it along its length, holding the handle for stability. Ensure the blade is supported to prevent flexing.
  3. Sharpening Process: Match the angle of the sharpener to the edge angle of the tool. Push the sharpener across the edge while maintaining a consistent angle. Use as much of the sharpener as possible with each stroke, moving across the blade and utilizing the length of the sharpener simultaneously.
  4. Apply Moderate Pressure: Sharpen one side, then the other, until the edge becomes very sharp. Don’t worry if the edge looks rough; as long as it’s sharp, it will perform well for heavy use.

Safety First: Blade will become very sharp. Use caution and keep fingers clear.

I bought this item to help me sharpen my lawn equipment instead of a file. Shovels, machetes, lawn mower blades, axes and the like. It didn't disappoint. It's a very coarse stone, so if you want a razor sharp edge on your stuff, you would need to get a separate finishing stone (obviously). Be careful if you do, because the sharper the edge, the easier it will chip if it isn't made out of top-quality steel. It is also fairly long, about 10", a little over 2" wide at the middle, and about .5" thick. It fits fairly well in my hand (between Men's size M and L). In my opinion, it's too bulky and heavy to take backpacking or camping, since a smaller stone will do the trick in almost all cases. This is especially useful when sharpening things with very long edges; like machetes and lawn mower blades, and as such, is a great tool to have in the garage. This tool has been very helpful with sharpening my lawn tools. I don't have to keep running small stones (sized for knife-sharpening) over the blades and I don't risk shortening the life of the blades by taking off tons of metal like with a file.Bits of metal will get stuck in the pores, as with other stones. I found the easiest way to combat that is to completely submerse the stone in a pitcher of water after each time you run over the blade. It'll probably end getting your pants soaked if you aren't careful, but better water than oil.

I picked up this sharpening stone because I have many different shapes of garden tools from sickles to hoes and spades. Because of its versatile shape, I was able to use it to put a nice sharp edge on several different tools. My Japanese weeding hoe is chopping weeds and roots better than ever. I'm looking forward to trying it on mower blades too. The only reason I took a star off is that there's only one texture or grit. Many sharpening stones have a rougher side for fixing nicks and putting on a rough edge and then a finer side for really putting on a sharp edge. This stone only has 2 rough sides but it still works well enough for doing a quick and dirty sharpening on my tools.

It has a comfortable shape to grasp. It has enough grit that it removes metal quickly, but not too quickly. It does a much better and more accurate job than a power tool. Let the tool do the work and you will feel pride with the job you've done. It feels good.

Small enough to sharpen hand pruners and large enough to handle riding lawnmower blades, I have also used it to keep my machetes sharp and even to smooth the blade on a dinged up shovel. The unique size and shape of this Lansky sharpener allows it to be used on several types of cutting tools, from small to large. Long enough to grip easily and rough enough to help you maintain that grip, this is the one sharpener I keep in my pocket when venturing into the Southwest Florida wetlands to keep my machetes and hatchets sharp when cutting down Brazilian Pepper trees.

Used on everything from shovels to scythe blades. Hold up great and helps keep a working edge.

Using the "Lansky Lawn & Garden Multi Purpose Sharpener" (use oil on the stone) I was able to put a super-sharp edge on the scythe fairly easily. Purchased and used along with the "Lansky Extra Coarse Diamond Accessory Hone Silver Holder" (which I used first to hone my rusty scythe blade quickly). Use the the extra coarse diamond honer from time-to-time to redo the edge, and use the stone constantly to keep the edge sharp. Use the honer and the stone on only one side of the scythe, and then use the stone only (and use it lightly) on the backside of the blade to remove the "burrs". The stone with proper use (use oil, once again) should last a long time. Well satisfied!

This is a nice little stone. Finer than I thought it would be I was expecting it to be a bit more corse this will bring back the edge on my SOG "throwing hatchets" which were like razors when new. It will not give you any edge you can shave with but it's very close. It would be better kept in a case it is thin hard stone.. I dropped one from waist-height accidentally over concrete and then I had three stones. At its price point though I didn't even cry I just ordered another one..

Really happy with this stone. I've bought similar ones from else where and they either showed-up broken or they broke on me pretty quickly. This was so-far is going strong and it's a little longer than I expected, which helps keep the hands and fingers clear of the blade.

I liked the stone but broke it when I dropped it. Ordered another one and will be more careful.
